Renovation Contest Voting Begins

February 15th, 2006

Well we ended up with 9 entrants instead of 12. More chance for the entrants to win, but leads me to the question.

“Why didn’t more people enter?”

With such a great prize I can only fathom that I didn’t get enough targeted traffic to the site. Or perhaps people didn’t want there site to be judged. Or perhaps they were afraid to have their site labelled as needing a makeover.

Personally if I had the chance to enter a contest like this I would. It’s free publicity for starters.

Anyway enough rambling. The contest is now open to voting.

Good luck everyone.

More Entrants Needed

February 10th, 2006

Setting myself a target of 12 sites to vote on didn’t seem like a hard target to meet at the time of starting this contest, but it appears that we may be short of entrants.

Never fear. The contest will still proceed.

I am now switching to using direct marketing techniques to try to attract more entrants. aka telemarketing since there is only 4 days left before voting starts. Which I hope will prove more fruitful.
I know there are plenty of sites out there that to list them all would take several pages, it’s just a matter of letting people know that the contest is running.

Quest Newspapers - Southern News Article

February 9th, 2006

I’ve transcibed the article in a post below, but for posterity I thought I’d scan it in and put it in a blog entry. You can right click on it, and view the image to make it larger.

Marketing Experiment + Helping others

February 8th, 2006

People have been asking me is this contest just a marketing exercise.?

I’ll set the record straight, right here and now.

This contest is NOT just a marketing exercise.

Yes I am covering new ground in my promotional learning for my business (which I’m finding very exciting), so it can be classified as a marketing exercise. But I am very passionate about using the web to the best of it’s ability for business, and it frustrates me no end when I see business websites that just don’t cut the mustard.

You can just look some business sites and say “well that’s not making them any money, either directly or indirectly”. What a waste of time for the owner and more importantly the pissed off visitor that didn’t get what they were after and probably will never return to the site again.

What frustrates me even more is that sometimes they have actually paid someone supposedly savvy in websites to set it up for them and they are still not seeing returns from their sites.

Just because you are a brilliant web designer doesn’t mean that you know how to bring a business onto the web. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, using the internet for business is exactly like having an offline business. It’s just another medium. The same principles that offline companies have been using for decades to build their businesses apply, you just have to know how.

That is what websiterenos.com is all about. Exposing the HOW through example.

Quest Newspapers Covers Website Renovations

February 8th, 2006

Websiterenos.com has been featured in a local Brisbane Quest newspaper, the story was printed in the Business section of the paper.

I’ll include it here for all to see. I’ll now be using this as a springboard to show other local suburban papers that the story is indeed newsworthy and hopefully make it into their papers as well. The next step is also up into the next level to national papers.

Worst Website will win makeover

Tarragindi resident Aaron Dwyer is on a quest to find Australia’s worst business website and fix it. Mr Dwyer runs Web Smart Central, a website development business that is running the competition to find the nation’s worst business website.

The winner will be awarded a complete website renovation to the value of $2000. Mr Dwyer said he particularly wished to reach local businesses through the competition. “I’m big on local, ultimately, it (the competition) is not just local, it’s Australia-wide but I want to help the local businesses first,” he said.

Entries will be accepted until February 15, however, internet visitors can vote for the worst website online until March 1.

As for how local websites compare to the rest of Australia, he simply said: “there are shockers everywhere”. The contest website is www.websiterenos.com.

Website Renovation meets Entrepreneurs Journey Blog

February 2nd, 2006

I’ve been following a great resource for awhile that is targeted to solo business owners. It has a wealth of information that you can use straight away in your business. Founded by Robert Gerrish, you won’t be dissapointed with the content.

http://flyingsolo.com.au

From this website I learned of another resource jam packed full of fantastic business ideas run by Yaro Starak a fellow Brisbane business owner.

http://entrepreneurs-journey.com

I wrote an article for Yaro’s blog on using competitions for publicity, credibility and marketing.

Plus I’m running some advertising for the contest on his blog.

Do you know who visits your website?

January 28th, 2006

Are you collecting your visitors details when they visit your website?

If not then you’re really leaving money on the table. Good chance you won’t sell to them on their first visit, but if you don’t know how to contact them, then you’re stuck and the potential purchaser is gone forever.

Give your visitors something of value to them (free report, free gift, etc) and get their email address and contact details in return. Follow up with them regularly (no need for a sales pitch each time) just give them good info about your industry, and build their trust.

There are several ways to go about doing this depending on what you have to offer your visitors, but to make your life as easy as possible, you will need some email software (either offline or online) that can handle sending multiple emails.

Next blog entry I’ll go through the different email software options you can use.

Worst Website Renovation Blog

January 26th, 2006

Our skinning of the blog is now complete, which ties the look of it in with the rest of our site. This is important. So here’s a tip, always keep your site looking consistant. The theme of your site should flow through all the pages. Once you have a template going then stick with it. I’ll outline our technique for this in another entry shortly.

Making your visitors work out what is going on or what the buttons do or what they need to press, is just asking for them to leave. So what, your site may win a design award, but if the visitors haven’t got a clue then your response rate from your site, just went flying out the window.

A recent University study confirmed that when it comes to generating sales online, you’ve only got 50 milliseconds before visitors click off your site.

Isn’t that amazing. That is why it is so important to get the visitors attention quickly and get them to keep reading. What does that? Several things actually, but an important one is a fantastic headline. More on that also in another blog entry.

PRWEB News Release Accepted

January 23rd, 2006

The PRWEB news release has been accepted so it’s release is due tonight. Can’t wait.

The Blog skin is still being fine tuned.

Well it was bound to happen but there was a clever bunny that put websmartcentral.com and websiterenos.com down as contenders and not used their own details in the submission form.

This occurred 1 minute after posting a thread to the www.whirlpool.net.au forum which was then deleted from that forum 3 minutes later. Subsequently with IP address checking and seeing which moderator removed the thread, I am 95% confident it was them.

Of course they don’t know that I know, and I’m not going to give them the pleasure directly. Needless to say they razzed our sites on how crap they were, yet when I visited this particular individuals site through their forum bio, it was nothing but a default template of Wordpress for a blog. So their comments are about as meaningful as a bucket with the bottom missing.
